The Research Evidence
A study published in Physiotherapy Theory & Practice examined 15 patients with diagnosed TMD who received a combination of chiropractic cervical adjustments and dry needling to the masseter and pterygoid muscles. Patients showed significant improvements in pain intensity, jaw range of motion, and functional jaw use. A comprehensive review of approximately 800 manual therapy studies found consistent evidence supporting manual intervention for TMD across multiple patient populations.
The Cervical Spine — TMJ Connection
The trigeminal nerve, which governs sensation and motor function in the jaw, converges with upper cervical nerve roots (C1-C3) in the trigemino-cervical nucleus of the brainstem. This means that problems in the upper cervical spine — joint restriction, muscle tension, disc dysfunction — can directly sensitize the TMJ pain system and vice versa. This bidirectional relationship explains why treating the cervical spine often resolves TMJ symptoms and why TMJ problems can cause neck pain and headaches.
