Low-Impact Collisions Can Still Cause Serious Injuries

Insurance adjusters and defense attorneys frequently argue that low-speed accidents — those under 10 mph — cannot cause significant injury. The biomechanical research does not support this claim. In fact, multiple studies have demonstrated that the forces generated in low-speed rear-end impacts are more than sufficient to injure spinal ligaments, muscles, and discs.

The Problem with Bumper Damage as a Proxy for Injury

Modern vehicle bumpers are designed to absorb and minimize property damage in low-speed impacts — not to protect occupants. A bumper that sustains minimal or no damage does not mean that little force was transmitted to the occupants. In some cases, a stiff, undamaged bumper may actually transmit more force to occupants than a crumpled one, because less energy is absorbed by the vehicle structure.

What the Research Shows

Crash test studies have documented that rear-end collisions at 5–10 mph subject occupants to head acceleration of 2.5 to 4.5 times the force of gravity (G). Human cadaver studies have shown that cervical ligament injury can occur at acceleration levels below these thresholds. The occupant's size, position, awareness of the impact, and seat geometry all influence injury risk.

Why Symptoms May Be Mild Initially

Soft-tissue injuries don't always produce immediate dramatic symptoms. Adrenaline, muscle guarding, and the gradual nature of inflammatory responses mean that the full extent of a low-impact injury may not become apparent for 24–72 hours. By that time, many patients have already declined to seek care — a decision that can lead to chronic pain.
