Their findings, published in a series of systematic reviews, identified manual therapy (including chiropractic manipulation and mobilization) as one of the most effective non-pharmacological approaches for reducing headache frequency and intensity in patients with concurrent cervical spine involvement.

Why Cervical Dysfunction Causes Headaches

The upper cervical spine (C1-C3) receives sensory innervation from the trigeminal nucleus — the same nerve center that processes facial and cranial pain. When joints in this region are dysfunctional, they generate pain signals that can be misinterpreted by the brain as originating from the head. This is the neurological basis of cervicogenic headache.
