Should Seatbelts or Car Seats Be Replaced After an Auto Accident?

After a car accident, most people focus on vehicle repairs, medical care, and insurance claims. An important safety consideration that often gets overlooked: the condition of your seatbelts and — if you have children — your child safety seats.

Seatbelts

Seatbelts save lives, but they are designed to work once. The webbing, locking mechanism, and pretensioner in a seatbelt can be permanently deformed during a crash, even if they appear intact from the outside. Most vehicle manufacturers and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommend replacing seatbelts that were worn during any crash that triggered airbag deployment, or in any moderate-to-severe impact.

After a minor collision, consult your vehicle manufacturer's guidelines. Some manufacturers recommend replacement after any impact; others only after significant crashes. When in doubt, replace them.

Child Safety Seats

The guidance on child car seats is clearer: the American Academy of Pediatrics and NHTSA previously recommended replacing child safety seats after any crash. Current NHTSA guidance distinguishes between minor and moderate/major crashes, allowing retention of seats in very minor accidents if specific criteria are met:

• The vehicle was driveable away from the crash scene
• No airbags deployed
• No visible damage to the seat
• No one in the vehicle was injured
• The car door nearest the seat was undamaged

If any of these conditions is not met, replace the seat regardless of visible damage.

A Note on Injury Documentation
