Chiropractic Achieves 94% Improvement Rate for Neck Pain

A landmark study published in the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy (JOSPT) produced one of the most striking findings in cervical spine research: when thoracic spinal manipulation was added to cervical treatment for neck pain patients, 94% experienced significant improvement — compared with only 35% in the group receiving cervical treatment alone.

Why the Thoracic Spine Matters for Neck Pain

The cervical and thoracic spines are mechanically interdependent. Restricted motion in the middle and upper back forces the cervical spine to compensate, generating additional stress on the joints and discs of the neck. Over time, this compensatory pattern becomes self-reinforcing — the neck hurts because the thoracic spine isn't moving, and restricted thoracic motion perpetuates neck dysfunction.

The 64-Patient Trial

The JOSPT study enrolled 64 patients with mechanical neck pain. One group received cervical manipulation alone; the other received cervical manipulation combined with high-velocity thoracic manipulation. Both groups underwent two treatment sessions over a week, after which pain and disability scores were measured. The results were unambiguous: the combined-treatment group far outperformed the cervical-only group on all outcome measures.
