A thorough review published in the Journal of Manual and Manipulative Therapy analyzed 11 randomized controlled trials examining chiropractic care for neck pain and reached a clear conclusion: manual manipulation and mobilization are effective treatments for both acute and chronic cervical pain.

Chiropractic for Chronic Neck Pain

One of the most interesting findings in the research review involved patients with chronic neck pain who had previously undergone cervical fusion surgery. Even in this post-surgical population, chiropractic care produced meaningful reductions in pain and disability. This challenges the notion that patients with a history of spine surgery cannot benefit from conservative care.

What Makes Neck Pain Chronic

Acute neck pain becomes chronic when the underlying mechanical dysfunction is not resolved. Muscles that were guarding injured joints become permanently tight. Joints that were hypomobile lose their full range of motion permanently if not mobilized. The nervous system adapts to the presence of persistent pain signals, amplifying them over time.
