One of the most common questions patients ask before their first chiropractic visit is: "Is it safe?" The answer, backed by multiple large-scale studies published in peer-reviewed journals, is a clear yes. Chiropractic care has an excellent safety record — comparable to many routine medical procedures and far safer than long-term use of pain medications.

What the Studies Say

Three significant safety studies stand out. Two were published in Spine, one of the world's most respected medical journals. The larger of the two followed approximately 20,000 patients through more than 50,000 chiropractic adjustments and found no serious adverse events. A third study specifically examined chiropractic care in children and reached the same conclusion: when performed by a trained, licensed chiropractor, adjustments are safe across all age groups.

Comparing Risks

When patients weigh their treatment options, it's worth understanding relative risk. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) carry risks of gastrointestinal bleeding and cardiovascular events with prolonged use. Opioid medications carry addiction risk. Surgery carries the risks of anesthesia, infection, and recovery complications. Chiropractic care — hands-on, drug-free, and non-surgical — avoids all of these.

What to Expect

Some patients experience mild soreness after their first few adjustments, similar to the feeling after beginning a new exercise program. This is normal, temporary, and usually resolves within 24 hours. Serious complications from properly administered chiropractic adjustments are extremely rare.
