TMJ Pain After a Car Crash: How Auto Injuries Affect the Jaw

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain following a motor vehicle accident is more common than many patients — and many physicians — realize. The connection between car crashes and jaw problems may not be immediately obvious, but the biomechanical link is well-established: cervical spine injury from a collision can produce delayed jaw symptoms through the neurological connections between the cervical spine and the trigeminal nerve system that governs jaw function.

How a Car Accident Injures the TMJ

Two mechanisms connect auto accidents to TMJ dysfunction:

• Indirect cervical mechanism: The rapid whipping motion of the cervical spine in a rear-end collision places stress on the cervical musculature and joints, particularly C1-C3. These upper cervical structures share neurological connections with the trigeminal system. Cervical joint dysfunction can sensitize the trigeminal pathway, producing secondary jaw pain, clicking, and restricted opening.

Patients who initially focused on neck and back pain often begin noticing jaw clicking, difficulty chewing, facial pain, or morning jaw stiffness as their primary symptoms stabilize.
